Intermediate Theatrical Lighting

The intermediate lighting course is designed to improve workers’ skills with a minimum of 3 years of experience in electrics. Topics covered include reading a lighting plot/channel hookup/instrument schedule, hanging/circuiting/addressing conventional and moving lights per the plot, hanging truss, power distribution, setting up and utilizing opto boxes/dimmer/208v racks, configuring complex data signals for multiple universes, calculating basic power requirements, and basic programming. This course is designed for beginning learners working toward an L-2 and L-1 status. Prior experience is required.

  • The proper way to safely circuit, hang, and fly out conventional and intelligent fixtures on a truss

  • The proper way to distribute power from the company switch through dimmer and 208v racks to lighting fixtures and motors

  • Create a basic patch and “ring out” lights using a Whole Hog and ETC ION console

  • Read lighting paperwork including the plot, instrument schedule, and channel hookup

  • The proper installation, signal flow, and power distribution for a basic lighting setup

  • DMX signal flow and how to properly address and patch intelligent fixtures

  • Change a conventional lamp in a LEKO or PAR and to swap a lens in a PAR

  • Change a connector on a 12/3 cable from stagepin to Edison

Danyela Marks is a Sub Electrician for Disney’s The Lion King and a business owner. She was previously the Assistant Electrician at Baltimore’s France-Merrick Performing Arts Center and holds a master's degree from New England College and a bachelor's degree from McDaniel College. Danyela has worked in the Broadway and Off-Broadway circuit of the live entertainment industry for 20 years and is a proud member of IATSE and AEA.
