Rigging Electric: Stage

Attendees focus on the world of stage rigging at a local sound stage. This immersive training will help members become well-versed in everything from laying cable, negotiating and working around set flats, rigging onto truss, and utilizing MEWPs for rigging electric applications.

Derek Whittington, Fred Young, & Andrew Bell, IATSE Local 481

Location: Boston, MA

Derek Whittington has been a proud member of Local 481 since 2009 and has worked primarily in the rigging electric department for the majority of his career. He often works as either a Gaffer or Best in the rigging electric department, and his most recent work includes Madame Web, Finest Kind, Boston Strangler, Julia (Season 1), Don’t Look Up, and The Tender Bar.

Fred Young has worked in the entertainment industry for over 15 years. He began his career in the theater as a Lighting Technician and Electrician. As the years went on, he found more work in film and television and his knowledge of DMX and Intelligent Lighting quickly solidified his place in the feature and TV world as a Programmer. His work has included Birdman, Wheelman, Central Intelligence, Ted 2, and The Finest Hours. Fred has also imparted his knowledge as an instructor at Maine Media Workshops (in the field of lighting) and has done seminars about DMX and Wireless DMX for industry leaders at High Output Inc as part of their Tech Talk Tuesdays guest lecture series.

Andrew Bell is a proud member of Local 481 and has been since 2006. He has worked primarily in the Rigging Grip department over many years and has served as both a Best as well as a Key throughout his career. He has mentored many important Local 481 classes, including our advanced Rigging Grip courses as well as our MEWP Basic Qualified Operator courses. Andrew’s most recent projects include a number of major feature films including Aftermath, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, The Gilded Age (Season 2), and Dexter: New Blood.
