Sewing Machine Basics
Students will get to know the mechanics of a sewing machine, basic machine sewing skills, and trouble-shooting common problems. They also learn how to thread, operate and troubleshoot issues for a basic sewing machine, and the necessary sewing skills to stitch a work bucket apron. This class is designed for those working in Costumes, Set Decoration, Props, and Grips who regularly encounter the need to have sewing machine to complete their jobs.

Heidi Hafer is a member of Local 705 and Local 478 and has over 30 years’ experience working in Costume Departments for both film and live theatre. With a BFA in Art History from Lindenwood College, Heidi started working in theatre costume shops. In Hollywood, she ran large custom-made workrooms both within costume houses and on productions. She has extensive knowledge of flat patterning, draping, and alterations for men and women. She was the personal tailor for many leading actors such as Kristen Bell, Natalie Cole, Scarlett Johansen, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alyssa Milano, Michael Douglas, Ryan Rynolds, and worked often with Costume Designers Julianna Makovsky, Julie Weiss, Ha Nguyen on projects such as The Hunger Games, Super 8, Enders Game, Maze Runner, and Priest.
Marci Franklin is a Local 478 Member and has been working in Costumes in theatre and film for 25 years. She was previously Costume Supervisor for Reparatory Theatre of St. Louis and moved to New Orleans in 2021 to work as Tailor/Fitter/Cutter/Stitcher for the film and television industry. She received her Arts Education degree from Lindenwood University and has previously taught classes in elementary through high school. She also taught Intro to Costumes as guest instructor at St. Louis University. She has worked on countless live theatrical productions and such film/tv shows as Interview with the Vampire, S1, Twisted Metal S1, Your Honor S2, Imaginary, Spinal Tap 2, and Sinners.
